FPV Roof Inspection Photos: A Findings Sheet for the Building Owner

Civil application reference

Turn roof photographs into a repair conversation

A building owner needs to find the photographed detail again, explain it to a roofer and record what happened next. When an authorized civil inspection supplies FPV roof imagery, deliver a numbered findings sheet alongside the photographs. A highlight reel alone is a poor maintenance record.

The worked example below is invented to demonstrate the sheet, not a customer project or a diagnosis. It concerns organizing existing imagery; aircraft suitability and professional roof assessment remain separate decisions.

RF-01 · Raised edgeExample only · no real building
Original diagram, not a photograph or survey. Use a building-specific orientation label on a real sheet.
Photo pair
Overview O-02 + detail D-07. Retain the original filenames in the image index.
Visible finding
An edge of the covering appears raised beside the courtyard-side junction. The underside is not visible.
Question for the roofer
Does this junction need an on-site examination? No cause, leak path or repair method is assigned from this picture.
Follow-up
Owner: ______   Review date: ______
Roofer's advice and reference: ______

Keep the location and the detail together

Place the same RF-01 marker on the overview and on a separate annotated copy of the detail. Keep the mark beside the feature so it does not cover the edge being discussed. Retain an unmarked original; an arrow should help the reader, not become part of the evidence.

Overview O-02

Shows which roof area contains RF-01, using a recognizable feature such as the vent and a confirmed side label. Do not add a compass direction from guesswork.

Detail D-07

Shows the feature at a useful reading size. Record the capture date when known; mark a video-derived image as a frame extract and include its clip reference.

The National Park Service uses numbered photographs, descriptive captions and a photo key in its own building-documentation process. That is a useful precedent for traceable labels, not a requirement that this maintenance sheet constitutes a preservation application. NPS documentation guidance.

Give uncertainty an action, not a verdict

If a junction is hidden by an obstruction or lost in glare, enter “not assessable in the supplied image” and identify the location. Do not mark it sound simply because no defect can be seen. A blurred crop belongs in the unresolved items, not among confirmed findings.

Refer visible concerns and reported indoor leaks to the owner's roofing professional. Keep the professional's assessment in the follow-up field, with its date and document reference. A photograph can direct attention to a place; it does not establish the condition beneath the covering.

Return a sheet the owner can update

Deliver the findings sheet as a readable PDF with its image index and original files. On follow-up, keep RF-01 and append the new photograph or advice; do not renumber the finding because its status changed. Close it only with a recorded basis, such as the named professional's completion note.

Different roof questions can require different image types and accuracy levels, as DJI's roof-inspection workflow explains. This visual findings sheet makes no thermal, dimensional or survey claim and does not establish those capabilities for the equipment pictured elsewhere on this page.
