Check Pixel Aspect Ratio Before Resizing an Imported FPV Still

Civil application reference · Before the sequence

Pixel counts do not tell the whole shape story

A still from an existing civilian FPV venue film looks stretched after import. Cropping it into a familiar rectangle would change the composition before establishing how the pixels should be displayed. First separate three quantities: the number of pixels across and down, the shape assigned to each pixel, and the resulting frame proportions.

1 · Count grid

1440 × 1080 pixels.
Twelve blocks represent groups of 360 × 360 samples, not twelve actual pixels.

2 · Pixel shape

Assumed PAR = 4:3.
One displayed pixel is four units wide for three units high.

3 · Display shape

16 : 9

The count ratio and pixel-shape ratio combine. No edge has been cropped.

Original geometric illustration with declared inputs, not a camera-format specification, a software screenshot or measured footage. Pixel and frame drawings use separate illustrative scales.

Keep the multiplier visible

Adobe defines pixel aspect ratio, or PAR, as one pixel's width divided by its height. A square pixel has PAR 1:1. That differs from dividing the frame's horizontal pixel count by its vertical count.

Display ratio = (pixel width ÷ pixel height) × PAR
(1440 ÷ 1080) × (4 ÷ 3) = 16 ÷ 9

For the same 1440 × 1080 count, assuming square pixels instead gives 4:3. Conversely, 1920 × 1080 already gives 16:9 with square pixels; applying the hypothetical 4:3 multiplier makes it wider, not more correct.

Pixel countsDeclared PARCalculated display ratio
1440 × 10801:14:3
1440 × 10804:316:9
1920 × 10801:116:9
1920 × 10804:364:27 ≈ 2.370:1

All four rows are hypothetical arithmetic. They do not identify the format of a particular FPV recording. Choosing a convenient-looking rectangle is not evidence for the source PAR.

Check the source asset before building the sequence

Adobe's correction guidance places this check before sequence creation. Select the still in the Project panel and open Clip > Modify > Interpret Footage. Under Pixel Aspect Ratio, Use Pixel Aspect Ratio From File reads the stored value; Conform To offers standard choices. The option is unavailable for a clip selected in the Timeline or Program Monitor.

Use reliable source information to resolve a mismatch. If the source PAR is unknown, leave the interpretation unresolved and ask the supplier; do not infer it from a drone brand, a filename or an object that seems oval. This is not a promise that changing an import choice repairs an existing sequence automatically.

Interpretation is not creative reframing, stabilization or recovery of missing pixels. No actual file was imported or visually tested here. Source basis: Adobe's Pixel aspect ratio and Correct aspect ratio misinterpretations, checked 7 September 2026. The retained workshop and quadcopter images do not establish the example's pixel properties.
