Check two screen roles, not just two connected cables
Imagine a permitted civilian FPV still on a venue slide, captioned “Hall entrance.” Its harmless speaker cue reads “Ask the room what they notice first.” The caption belongs in the audience's picture; the cue belongs with the presenter. This fictional rehearsal uses no actual presentation file or connected display.
Establish the assignment before the talk
The computer must support multiple monitors, with the second display connected. In Windows desktop PowerPoint, select Use Presenter View on the Slide Show tab, then start with From Beginning.
| Moment | Presenter display | Audience display |
|---|---|---|
| Before starting | Identify the intended working screen. Use the harmless cue while establishing the roles. | Ask a helper what is actually visible, rather than relying on a monitor number. |
| Show running | Read the cue and use slide navigation. | See the entrance still and public caption, not the cue. |
| After ending | Inspect the returned desktop before opening another window. | Check the screen again; do not assume the slide-only view survived. |
The last slide is not the last check
Microsoft explains that newer PowerPoint versions can restore the default display arrangement on exit, including Duplicate if that was the chosen default. Verify the post-show state separately.
