Let the listener build a picture of the rooms
An FPV property tour can move through a doorway before its audience understands which room they have entered. For someone who cannot see the film, music and an enthusiastic sales voice may explain almost none of that layout. Audio description should supply the essential visual relationships, not a running commentary on the camera's movement.
Start with the finished, authorized edit. Identify what its pictures communicate that the existing soundtrack does not. W3C's description guidance focuses on that missing visual information, including meaningful on-screen text. The miniature script below is an invented example, not a transcript of this site's videos or a real property.
Establish the entrance
Imagined picture: entrance hall opening into a sitting room. No speech occupies this interval.
“A short entrance hall opens into the sitting room. Two tall windows face the sofa.”
Explain the connection
Imagined picture: the sitting room and kitchen share an open passage. A presenter has just finished speaking.
“An open passage connects the sitting room to the kitchen. An island separates the cooking area from the dining table.”
Name the change of space
Imagined picture: glass doors beyond the table reveal a courtyard. The interval contains music only.
“Beyond the dining table, glass doors look onto a walled courtyard. A paved area surrounds a small central tree.”
These intervals are drafting spaces, not a prescribed speaking speed. Read each line aloud over the actual edit. If a sentence runs into the next scene, shorten it without losing the room relationship, or change the described version's timing. Do not race through the words to keep an attractive transition untouched.
Use a stable reference
“Beyond the dining table” gives the listener an anchor. “Now we turn left again” mostly describes the moving camera and becomes confusing after a cut. Introduce each room by its verified name, then describe the feature needed to understand its relationship to the previous space.
A narrow-looking passage in wide-angle footage does not establish its dimensions. Likewise, do not turn an apparently level threshold into an accessibility claim. Read verified dimensions when they are part of the intended information; do not estimate them from the picture.
Leave room for the existing sound
Do not speak over the presenter's useful explanation just to describe a detail already named. For a new edit, the main narration may carry the missing information naturally. For an existing dense soundtrack, a separate described version can provide more space.
Captions represent speech and relevant sounds as text; they do a different job. Automatically transcribing “welcome to the kitchen” will not explain the island's position. W3C's caption guidance also warns that automatic captions need accuracy checking.
