Keep an FPV Image Traceable Through Crops and Annotations

Civil application reference

Make the marked-up view lead back to its original

A recipient points at a label in an FPV image and asks, “What was outside this crop?” An editor should be able to answer without searching through near-identical exports. Keep the original, the crop and the annotation connected by the actual editing steps, not just by similar filenames.

Here is a fictional example for a community garden information page. The entire diagram is drawn, not photographed. Its dimensions and board position are invented to demonstrate image editing; they say nothing about a real site or aircraft camera.

Concept only: the brown rectangle is the crop; the dot stands for the information board. This is an image-coordinate illustration, not a map or measured site plan.
O · Supplied original

4800 × 3200 pixels. Retained without this editor's changes.

C · Clean crop from O

2400 × 1600 pixels. No labels painted into it.

A · Annotated crop from C

Same crop, with a separate “Information board” label.

W · Page copy from A

1200 × 800 pixels. A delivery derivative, not a new original.

Check where the annotation belongs

Measure from the top-left corner of the displayed original. C starts at x=1200, y=600. The board at original position (1800,1000) therefore lies at (600,400) in C. If the complete annotated crop is reduced to half its width and height for W, that position becomes (300,200).

Those numbers describe only this unrotated example. A later rotation, different crop or other geometric edit requires a new relationship. Do not paste the old label at its previous pixel position and assume it still points to the board.

Keep a clean branch beside the marked-up one

Create the annotation in an editable layer rather than painting it into the only available image. Retain C so someone can examine the area beneath the label. Adobe's nondestructive-editing guidance describes ways to preserve image data through editable adjustments and masks. The important outcome here is being able to revise the presentation without reconstructing discarded context.

Parent relationship
C comes from O; A adds a label to C; W reduces A for the page.
Crop instruction
O's displayed orientation; left1200, top600, width2400, height1600. No rotation.
Annotation meaning
“Information board” is an editorial label, not lettering captured by the camera.
What was not done
No object removal or invented scene detail in this example. Record actual additional edits if performed.

This compact note belongs with the editable version, not only inside a flattened export. In Lightroom Classic, virtual copies store alternative adjustments in the catalog; they are not separate duplicate image files until exported or edited as copies. A thumbnail showing two versions therefore does not, by itself, establish that two deliverable files exist.

Try the recipient's question before delivery

Open W, identify its parent A, switch off the label and locate the crop within O. If the wider garden context is requested later, start again from O rather than enlarging W. Keep any revised crop as a new branch so a comment about the earlier one still makes sense.

The result is a recoverable explanation of this editor's changes. It does not authenticate the supplied scene, verify camera metadata or turn the illustration into survey evidence.
