Choose the frame that answers the handover question
A garden coordinator wants one still from an existing FPV recording to explain which entrance is beside the noticeboard. The most dramatic frame may be a poor answer: the board could be tiny, obscured or blurred. Put a few plausible frames together and make the selection against that single question.
The four panels below are original drawings of an invented scene. They are not extracts from a watched recording, photographs of a customer site or evidence of camera performance. Their times are illustrative elapsed positions, not real source timecodes.
The selected still's accompanying sentence
Illustrative delivery text: “The garden entrance is beside the noticeboard. Selected view D shows both features together; this image does not reproduce the board's written information.”
That last distinction matters. D can explain where the board sits without making its lettering readable. If the handover later needs the opening hours printed on it, the task has changed. Use verified text or a suitable existing detail view; do not invent the wording from a blurred panel.
Review the exported frame, not just the thumbnail
Compare each candidate at the size its recipient will actually see. Then open the proposed selection separately and inspect the relevant feature at its native pixel size. A contact sheet is useful for comparison, but its small previews are not the final quality check.
Keep the selection tied to the supplied clip and its exact frame reference. Adobe's still-frame export guide describes choosing a frame in a source clip or sequence and exporting it as an image. Its documented export also adds timecode to the filename.
Make the alternatives easy to compare
Use consistent thumbnail boxes and readable references so the reader can compare the subject rather than the layout. Adobe's contact-sheet guidance includes thumbnail layout controls and filename captions. The four decisions here are an original editorial example, not an Adobe scoring standard.
Keep the reason for rejecting B or C beside its thumbnail. “Blurred board edge” or “post covers board” tells the next editor what mattered. A star rating alone loses that explanation when the recipient's question changes.
Package the choice so it can be reused
Deliver D as its own still, the small selection sheet and the identified source reference. Say whether the frame reference belongs to the original clip or to a particular edit; a time in a revised sequence may identify a different picture.
If none of the actual candidates answers the question, leave the still unselected. The contact sheet can explain that limitation without requesting a new flight or pretending another frame exists. This method evaluates an existing illustration; it does not assess a drone, certify site access or document change over time.
