DJI Goggles 3 for Indoor Playback: Fit, Lens Spacing and Focus

Civil application reference · Indoor playback

Separate the fit of DJI Goggles 3 from the focus of each eye

During a seated review of recorded civilian FPV footage, “the picture is unclear” can describe several different observations. The headset may have shifted, the two views may not align, or a viewer may be adjusting focus. Treating every complaint as a reason to tighten the headband makes the conversation less useful.

This guide concerns an already prepared DJI Goggles 3 used indoors for playback. It is not a vision test, prescription or flight procedure. The device's own manual remains the reference for its controls.

Headband and pad

Position and support on the head. These are not the diopter controls.

Lens spacing

Side-to-side alignment. DJI calls this interpupillary-distance adjustment, or IPD.

Diopter knobs

Separate optical adjustment for the left and right views. Do not assume both settings must match.

The Goggles 3 manual, pages 9–11, places wearing adjustment before clear-vision adjustment. It recommends the rear battery compartment sit on the upper back of the head. With the bottom knobs unlocked, their sideways movement adjusts lens spacing; rotation adjusts diopters. After obtaining a clear view, the knobs are pressed in and turned to lock. Do not force the band or knobs.

Use an unchanged view for the comparison

Pause a familiar indoor-review clip on a frame containing some ordinary text or a clear edge. Keep that frame unchanged while discussing the fit. Otherwise a new scene, tiny lettering or a moving subject can change what the viewer is trying to describe. This is an informal communication aid, not a calibrated chart or an assessment of eyesight.

Left view

Describe clarity at the current setting. Do not copy the right side's value merely for symmetry.

Right view

Describe this view separately. Then consider whether the combined picture is aligned.

The two panels are conceptual notes, not simulated optical results. They help a helper ask which observation changed without diagnosing its cause. A clear view reported by one person does not establish a suitable setting for the next wearer.

A more useful exchange

Viewer: “The headset slipped lower, and now the picture is harder to see.”

Helper: “Let's describe the position first, then use the manual's alignment and focus controls. We do not need to change the video to answer that question.”

This exchange is invented. Its aim is to avoid changing the band, lens spacing, diopters and source image together, then guessing which change mattered. If the view remains uncomfortable, stop the review rather than forcing an adjustment to an end position or recording a false success.

Know when the built-in adjustment is not the answer

DJI's official fit and optical FAQ states an IPD range of 56–72 mm and built-in diopter adjustment from −6.0 D to +2.0 D. These are device limits, not recommended personal settings. DJI directs users needing unsuitable or additional correction to an optician for appropriate lenses. No prescription calculation or improvised lens fitting is offered here. Keep the lenses away from direct sunlight, as DJI also warns.
